
GFBLA Marching Band
The Band Director (“Director”) is responsible for coordinating their band including recruiting members, selecting music, conducting rehearsals, identifying instrument needs, and other duties related to their band. The Director will also be part of the Artistic Committee which plans and produces all performances and music events within the GFBLA organization. As an artistic leader within GFBLA, the Band Director must build and sustain GFBLA’s visibility and involvement in LGBTQ+, allied, and other marginalized communities. The Band Director reports directly to the Artistic Director to carry out the job responsibilities and duties.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Implements the artistic vision and focus of GFBLA as set forth by the Artistic Director by designing performances in line with GFBLA’s mission and core values.
- Creates a calendar of rehearsals to prepare the band for performances, gigs, or other relevant appearances.
- Leads all band rehearsals.
- Coordinates the loan and retrieval of equipment with the Director of Operations.
- Helps maintain and grow GFBLA’s music library in coordination with the Artistic Director and Librarians.
- Supports the Artistic Director’s development and management of the artistic budget.
- Supports the Artistic Director’s development of GFBLA’s artistic goals.
- Manages and runs their band committee.
- Completes other duties as assigned by the Artistic Director.
PROGRAM AREA RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Works with other GFBLA Board and Staff to recommend dates and format for annual performance calendars.
- Coordinates band performances that include other GFBLA bands in conjunction with the Artistic Director.
- Seek out and maintain relationships with other community organizations for potential partnerships.
- Collaborates with the Membership Committee for recruitment in support of instrumentation needs.
- Assists in the general promotion of the band by being available for public appearances and attends official functions, receptions, etc., on behalf of GFBLA.
- Maintains, builds, and rehearses a set of standards for performances and other appearances.
- Seeks and organizes performances within the capability and availability of the membership.
- Seeks professional development opportunities in conducting techniques and instruction.
OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Ability to transcribe or arrange scores and parts.
- Capability to conduct rehearsals for one or more other GFBLA bands.
- Effective verbal, written, and listening communication skills.
- Ability to effectively communicate in one-on-one, small group, and full rehearsal situations.
- Proficient and working knowledge with the Google Suite of products (Gmail, Google Drive, Docs, Sheets, Slides, Forms, etc).
- Demonstrated ability to work with a diverse group of musicians.
- Demonstrated ability to teach musical concepts at all levels of proficiency.
- Effective problem-solving skills.
- Ability to promote a positive overall public image of the band in the community, Pride Bands Alliance at large, and beyond.
REQUIRED EDUCATION AND/OR WORK EXPERIENCE:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Music or equivalent experience in the field.
- A Master’s Degree in Music is preferred, but not required.
- Minimum of two years teaching or leadership experience required, preferably at the college level.
- High level of facility of at least one instrument and performance experience.
RATE
This position is paid at a rate of $21/hr, with an expectation of 3-5 hours of work per week on average.
